This stunning ancient pigeon breed has a recorded captivating history and legacy stemming as far back as the 11th century. Originating from Turkey, this exclusive pigeon breed was developed for and adored by Ottoman Sultan Dynasty for roughly 700 years.
The Classic Oriental Frill is an exhibition breed of pigeon from the Owl family. It is a Turkish breed specially bred for the Ottoman Sultans. In its homeland it is known as Hünkari: the bird of the Sultans from 1299-1922.
Manisa, Turkey (an old Ottoman City in western Turkey). The Ottoman Sultan requested a special breed of pigeon to be bred in the Manisa Palace. Pigeon breeders developed this unique breed of pigeon they called Hünkari: the bird of the Sultans from 1299-1922.
The “Hünkari”, or as it’s known today outside Turkey, “the Oriental Frill” was first imported to England in 1864 and then then to America in 1879. Today, we know the “Hünkari” as the “Classic Oriental Frill” or the “Old Fashioned Oriental Frill” and the “Old Style Oriental Frill“. This is not the same as the “Modern Oriental Frill” aka “Oriental Frill“.
“Classic” is the precursor breed from which the “Modern Oriental Frill” was created via selective breeding methods. The “Classic” possess less exaggerated features unlike the “Modern“. The “Classic” can feed and raise up their own young, where as the “Modern” beak has been bred to such extreme small sizes for shows therefore making it impossible for them to feed their own babies. The “Modern” require foster bird parents to feed and raise up more “Modern” babies.
I personally find this to be on the cruel and unnatural side of things therefore I do not raise the “Modern Frills”.
For centuries the breed was kept away from the common people. This is one of the reasons why Hünkari is still known as the bird of the sultans in its homeland. The white spots on the tail is called the “Seal of the Sultan”. That’s why it’s an important feature in the standard of the Sattinettes.
